Ten Common Questions About Laser Cutting

At SSC Laser, we eat and breathe laser cutting on a daily basis. We live it every day. Some of the team have been working in the industry all their working lives and have clocked up a wide range of skills in the sector.

Combined, we believe we have one of the most comprehensive laser cutting teams in the country. Not only do we have the skills in our highly trained and dedicated staff, but we also have the technical expertise and technology to back this up.

Over the past 20 years, we have invested heavily in laser cutting technology and systems, making SSC Laser one of the UK’s leading laser cutting sub-contractors. We are proud to supply bespoke laser cut components and parts to some of the UK’s leading manufacturers.

We get thousands of enquiries every month. The majority of these enquiries come from manufacturers and organisations who are looking to partner with us to provide laser cutting solution that fits what they are looking for. If a customer has electronic drawings such as dxf’s or dwg’s and know the grade of material they need, they can trust the team at SSC Laser; because we provide quick quotes, good lead times and deliver what they want, when they want it.

However, some of our enquiries come from customers who know what they want, they know their end goal, but don’t have the in-house skills or knowledge of how to get there. They might have an idea for a product or require a laser cut component that fills a particular requirement, and they come to us to make that requirement real.

So, with this in mind we thought we’d collate some of the top questions we get asked about laser cutting and answer them for you.

1. I don’t have a technical drawing of my part, product or component, does this matter?

In short, no. We have a top-notch team of CAD/CAM engineers based at our manufacturing facility. And while it would be great to have supplied artwork provided, our guys can take rough designs and work them up into a workable file suitable for laser cutting. We also have a 2D scanner that can take a flat component and create a dxf in seconds. This is ideal for complex parts.

2. What metals do you laser cut?

Little fact, SSC stands for Steel Service Centre. We cut a wide range of steel and metals. Including mild steel (0.5-25mm), stainless steel (0.5-30mm) and aluminium (0.5mm to 30mm) in most forms. Due to the introduction of fiber technology, we can also laser cut Brass up to 15mm and Copper up to 12mm.

For more info, read our blog here.

3. How quickly can you manufacture my part, product or component?

With a manufacturing facility that works non-stop, we aim to produce components as quickly as possible. All of our quotes state full and accurate lead times on the day of issue. We will then confirm these lead times at the point of order, so you know exactly what is happening with your order and when. Demand plays a massive part in to when your order is completed, but the standard lead time for flat laser cut components is 3 to 5 days. However, the team at SSC Laser are a helpful bunch and if you need your items quicker, let us know and we’ll do everything in our power to help.

4. I’ve researched other manufacturing methods, why should I use Laser Cutting?

Three reasons why you should consider laser cutting. It is accurate. It is fast, and it is cost-effective.

5. Do I have to order hundreds of units from you?

The beauty of laser cutting is that you can cut one component or one million components. The cost will be different for the latter, but by utilising laser cutting technology, we can cut as much or as little as you need. If you need more units further down the line, all we need to do is load your design, click the button, and you can have precisely the same component as you order previously with zero changes.

6. I need to replicate a part I no longer have files for, can you replicate it?

Yes, we can, by utilising state-of-the-art laser scanning technology, we can take a scan of an item to create the required drawings to reproduce your part via our laser cutting machines.

7. How accurate is laser cutting?

Very! Laser cutting can cut parts to plus or minus 0.2mm.

8. I am based miles away from your facility, does this matter?

No, it doesn’t. At SSC, we cover the entirety of the United Kingdom. Our sales support teams work with clients all over the country and can come to visit you in person to discuss your needs one to one if needed, or with the current COVID-19 situation we are happy to schedule a phone call or Microsoft Teams Video Call. We offer fantastic lead times and deliver nationwide, making SSC the real one-stop-shop for all your laser cutting needs.

9. How long have you been in business? I need to work with a stable provider.

It is hard to believe that we are celebrating our 20th anniversary this year! That is 20 years of supplying high quality, laser cutting services to some of the UK’s leading organisations. Our longevity is down to having a passion for excellence and we have accreditations such as ISO 9001:2015 and CE Marking to give our customers the trust that we operate professionally and that what we say you are getting, is exactly what you will get.

10. Do you have any case studies I can read?

Yes, we have a raft of case studies on our website, which can be found here. We also share snaps of components we cut for customers on our social media platforms, why not check out our Instagram page today?
